Abstract
Background: Several studies suggest that extended transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided prostate biopsy improve the cancer detection rate compared with sextant TRUS biopsy. We performed a prospective randomized study to compare the prostate cancer detection rate and efficacy during 6, 8 and 10 core TRUS guided prostate biopsies.

Methods: Between March 2001 and June 2005, 175 men with an increased prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a normal rectal examination finding and a negative transrectal ultrasound prostatic pattern, underwent TRUS guided prostate biopsy with 6, 8 or 10 peripheral zone tissue cores at random. Mean age of patients was 66 and mean value of serum PSA was 7.97 ng/ml.

Results: Prostate cancer was detected in 13 patients (20%) in 6 core biopsy group, 12 patients (20%) in 8 core biopsy group and 10 patients (20%) in 10 core biopsy group. The cancer detection rate was no significant difference between 3 groups (P£¾0.05).

Conclusion: The overall cancer detection rate is no significant difference between 3 groups. The systemic sextant biopsy of the prostate is an effective at detecting prostate cancer as extended core biopsy in this study.
